ABOUT EBELLE SHUM
ARTIST STATEMENT

Ebelle Shum's artistic practice revolves around creating saturated, dark, and evocative oil paintings. Her work delves into the complexities of the gaze, intertwining elements of the uncanny, Surrealism, and feminine motifs to engage with contemporary discourse on identity and femininity. She creates a narrative on the power dynamics inherent in the act of gazing, drawing inspiration from themes such as Vanitas and the Macabre, and using elements of predominantly nude female figures within imagined natural scenes and spaces to weave in feminist perspectives.
